What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration

tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire

access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

In our classroom

At Mount Lewis Infants School, we support students with high potential to grow and develop their talents every day. We help them reach their best through a range of learning experiences, including:

activities that are suited to each child’s pace and level, encouraging higher-order thinking
regular feedback to track progress and adapt learning to their needs
teaching strategies that build critical thinking and problem-solving skills
group work that encourages teamwork, idea sharing, and presentations
feedback focused on each child’s strengths, with personal goals to aim for
opportunities to take on leadership roles in the classroom

Across our school

Our school offers a variety of programs and initiatives designed to support student growth in all areas: intellectual, creative, physical, and social-emotional.

Intellectual growth is encouraged through activities including public speaking competitions, coding, maths and writing extension groups and STEM activities.
Creativity is nurtured through programs in Visual Arts including School Choir, ES1 and S1 Dance groups and Operation Art.
Physical development is supported through participating in the Premier's Sporting Challenge, Jump Rope for Heart, school athletics carnival and the School Swim Scheme.
Leadership and social-emotional skills are strengthened through programs including Student Representative Council (SRC), peer buddies and speaking at school events.

These programs give students the chance to explore their talents, develop new skills, and grow as confident, well-rounded individuals.
